In a world that often glorifies busyness, it can feel counterintuitive, even risky, to step away from work, deadlines, or career pressures. Yet sometimes, the best career move you can make is to pause.

Whether you’re navigating a career transition or recovering from burnout, intentional pauses are not luxuries. They’re necessities. They give your mind space to process, your body space to recover, and your soul space to recalibrate.

Last week, I took such a pause. I unplugged, disconnected from the job search, and spent time in nature. I kayaked, swam in the river, visited with family, and just sat quietly, letting the rhythm of the outdoors restore my perspective. Nature has a remarkable way of resetting the mind and healing the soul. The rustle of leaves, the gentle ripple of water, the calm presence of the sky. All of it reminded me that clarity, creativity, and resilience often emerge when we allow ourselves to simply be.

Rest Is Not Wasted Time

So often, we measure productivity by what we do, what we achieve, or how many tasks we check off a list. But rest is not wasted time. In fact, it’s essential.

When we pause:

The Power of Intention

Pauses are most effective when they’re intentional. This isn’t about scrolling through your phone in a half-hearted break or zoning out at your desk. It’s about consciously stepping into an activity, place, or practice that restores you.

For some, this might be a quiet walk in the park. For others (like me), it’s a weekend camping trip, a meditation session, or simply sitting with a cup of tea and letting your mind settle. The key is that the pause is purposeful. It’s a deliberate act of self-care and reflection.

Invitation to Step Away

I invite you to try it. Step away from your routine, your screen, your obligations, even if for only a short period. Breathe. Recharge. Listen to what your mind, body, and soul are asking for.

You might be surprised at what emerges: fresh ideas, renewed energy, a sense of calm, or even a new perspective on a career challenge or life decision. And when you return, you’ll come back stronger. More focused, more creative, and more grounded.

A Closing Thought

In our culture, pause is often misunderstood as weakness or lost time. In truth, it’s one of the most powerful career moves you can make. I know I needed the pause more than I even knew. Pausing allows you to step off the hamster wheel long enough to see where it’s taking you and to redirect your path with intention, clarity, and purpose.

Sometimes the best career move isn’t a new job, a promotion, or a title. Sometimes, it’s a pause. My job search can wait just a little bit longer.
